University of Toronto

TCART is affiliated with University of Toronto, an educational institution acclaimed as Canada's leader in research. Macleans Magazine consistently ranks the University of Toronto as one of Canada's top research-intensive university
.

TCART has immediate access to all new research findings of the Division of Reproductive Sciences, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto, and participates in research protocols approved by the University of Toronto Committee for Research on Human Subjects.

TCART Staff Contributing to Technology

Dr. Robert F. Casper, head of the TCART medical staff, has been very active in reproductive endocrine and infertility research over the last 25 years, with more than 250 research publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or medical text books. Dr Casper is a past president of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society and is a member of the editorial board of several leading fertility research journals.

Together with Dr. Casper, several members of the TCART medical staff have contributed to the rapidly-advancing field of reproductive technology. At TCART, we have pioneered several innovative techniques or treatments. For example, we developed testing for DNA fragmentation in sperm, which is now routinely performed at MSH. We also pioneered a method for selecting viable sperm for ICSI from samples with no sperm motility. Dr Casper and his research team were the first to use aromatase inhibitors for ovulation induction as a replacement for clomiphene (Clomid, Serophene) in women with side effects to the older drugs. We demonstrated the success of a slow cooling technique for oocyte freezing at TCART, resulting in the first pregnancy (twins) from this procedure in Canada. More recently, we have used an in vitro model of endometriosis that we developed to find new treatments for this condition and to answer the question of why some women get endometriosis while others don't. As a result of this research, we have determined the genetic basis of endometriosis and a potential gene test to detect young girls at risk of developing endometriosis.

What Does This Mean for TCART Patients?

The TCART medical staff have the ability to use the latest information and techniques developed from the research conducted at the University of Toronto and the surrounding Toronto teaching hospitals in helping you to achieve your fertility goals.
