Known Ovum Donor

Any client requiring egg donation may bring a healthy female volunteer under the age of 38 who agrees to be an egg donor.

Who can be a donor and what is expected of them?
Any healthy female under the age of 38 has the opportunity of becoming an ovum donor.

All potential donor, recipient and partners must be willing to undergo screening for any genetic, familial, social, medical and reproductive diseases including testing for genital tract infections and HIV and Hepatitis Screening.

All parties must sign a consent indicating her willingness to donate her excess eggs.

All parties must be willing to take part in psycho-social counseling.

Who can be a recipient and what is expected of them?

The recipients of the donated egg(s) are women who have poor or no ovarian function due to:

1. Premature ovarian failure
2. Turner's Syndrome
3. Surgical removal of the ovaries
4. Inherent genetic abnormality
5. Decreasing ovarian function

What happens during a Donor/Recipient cycle?
Donors who have volunteered to take part in the program are screened as outlined above. If accepted, they are stimulated with medication to produce a number of oocytes, as in the induction protocol for in vitro fertilization.

Recipients are put on a medication regime to help prepare the lining of the uterus to receive embryo(s).

An oocyte retrieval is performed on the donor, under ultrasound guidance. Oocytes that are chosen for donation are inseminated with the recipients' partner's sperm (if required, donor sperm).

The resulting embryo(s) are transferred into the uterus of the recipient.

All efforts are made to maintain strict confidentiality.

Please be aware that it is illegal to pay an egg donor in Canada. You may however pay for out of pocket expenses for the donor. You must retain receipts of all out of pocket expenses.
